The color

Rift Cut White Oak Chestnut is a satin stain in the medium wood range, neither honey nor walnut. The undertone is a soft red-brown with a trace of amber. The stain is translucent, so the straight grain stays visible.

In north light, the brown cools and settles toward cocoa. In south light, it warms to amber and the grain lines brighten. Under warm LEDs, it moves toward copper. At 2700K it glows, and at 3000K it stays closer to neutral.

What to pair it with

Honed white quartzite, soapstone and pale limestone all give the brown room to breathe. Skip polished black stone, which flattens the grain.

For metals, unlacquered brass and aged bronze deepen the red in the stain. Blackened steel sharpens it. Brushed nickel keeps things quiet.

On the floor, choose something lighter or cooler: limestone, pale terrazzo, or oak a few shades lighter than the cabinets.

Where it works

In a prewar co-op, it grounds a narrow galley without darkening it. In a brownstone, it suits Gramercy's applied molding. In lofts and condos, the slab doors (Mercer, Bond, Bowery) show the grain cleanly. For Long Island houses, the beaded Shelter Island and Cold Spring doors suit it well.

Care and durability

A stain shows the wood rather than covering it, so expect natural variation from door to door. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry right away. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, and wipe standing water near the sink and dishwasher.

Like any wood, it can shift slightly over years of strong sun. To see it in your own light, request a sample or explore more finishes.
