The color
Umber is a dark brown with the red pulled back. The satin sheen keeps the surface calm, and the straight rift cut grain reads as fine lines rather than cathedral swirls.
In north light, the kind you get in a rear-facing brownstone kitchen, it cools and deepens toward espresso. In south light the brown warms and the grain becomes easier to see. Under warm LEDs it turns richer and slightly amber. Check a sample in your own room at morning and evening.
What to pair it with
Honed white marble or a pale quartzite gives the strongest contrast. Soapstone keeps everything dark and tonal. For metals, try unlacquered brass, aged bronze or blackened steel.
Floors in natural white oak, limestone or pale terrazzo balance the weight of the cabinets. Avoid red-toned floors, which fight the brown.
It comes on Gowanus, Varick, Mercer and Bowery (slab), Remsen (shaker) and Gramercy Bevel (applied molding). Compare them in door styles.
Where it suits
Umber works well in a prewar apartment with a narrow galley, where a full wall of dark cabinetry can look deliberate. It also suits a Brooklyn row house, a Tribeca loft, or a Long Island ranch that wants more warmth. Give it a window, or pair it with lighter walls, in a room that gets little daylight.
Care and durability
Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry the surface. Use mild soap when needed. Skip abrasive pads and ammonia cleaners. Wipe up water near the sink and dishwasher promptly.
Because this is a stain, the oak's natural variation shows through, and no two doors match exactly. See more in finishes, or contact us for a sample.
