The color

Rift Cut White Oak Navy is a stain, not a paint. The color sits in the wood, so the tight, straight grain stays visible as fine vertical lines. The tone is a dark, inky navy that reads closer to blue-black until light hits it.

In north light it cools down toward midnight, and the grain recedes. South light brings out the blue and makes the grain lines more distinct. Under warm LEDs the blue settles toward charcoal, with a hint of brown in the oak.

What to pair it with

Honed white marble or a pale quartzite keeps the contrast soft. Unlacquered brass and aged bronze warm the navy, while polished nickel keeps it crisp.

Wide-plank natural oak floors suit it well, as does a pale herringbone. Avoid red-toned woods, which fight the blue. Walls in a warm white or plaster finish let the cabinetry carry the room.

Where it suits

It works in a Manhattan prewar co-op kitchen where you want depth without a heavy look. It also fits a Brooklyn brownstone, a Long Island colonial, or a shingle-style house near the water.

Choose Remsen Wide for a clean shaker profile. Sag Harbor, Cold Spring and Cold Spring II bring a beaded edge. Gramercy and Sutton add applied molding. Browse the full door styles or see the TKG Inset collection.

Care and durability

A stained finish is easy to live with. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry the surface afterward. Use mild soap when needed, and skip abrasive pads and ammonia-based cleaners.

Wipe spills near the sink and range promptly. The satin sheen hides fingerprints better than gloss does. Oak responds to seasonal humidity, so slight variation in tone and grain is normal.
