The color
Rift Cut White Oak Black Coffee is a dark, brown-leaning stain with a satin sheen. Rift cutting runs the grain in tight, straight lines, so the surface reads as fine vertical pinstripes. The stain deepens the wood without hiding it.
In north light, the color stays cool and quiet, close to espresso. In south light, the brown opens up and the grain becomes easy to see. Under warm LEDs it moves toward roasted chestnut, and a 2700K lamp will read richer than 3000K.
What to pair it with
Honed white marble or a pale quartzite gives the strongest contrast. A soft gray soapstone-look surface keeps the room moody.
Brushed or unlacquered brass suits the warm undertone. Blackened steel works if you want a tonal kitchen. Polished chrome tends to look cold against it.
For floors, choose natural-finish white oak, limestone, or light terrazzo. Avoid a dark floor that competes with the cabinets.
Where it works
In a brownstone, it grounds a parlor-floor kitchen without darkening the room. In a prewar co-op, it makes a narrow galley feel deliberate. On Long Island, it suits colonial and mid-century ranch kitchens with generous windows.
It is available on Bowery, Bond, Remsen, Chelsea, Sutton, and Union. Browse the door styles or the TKG Inset collection.
Care and durability
This is a stain, so the grain stays visible and tone varies slightly from board to board. That variation is the point of the finish.
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry right away. Skip abrasive pads and harsh cleaners. Wipe spills promptly near the sink and range. Dust shows more on dark wood, so keep a dry cloth handy.
