The color
This is a dark wood, not a painted black. Rift Cut White Oak Charcoal is a graphite stain with a quiet brown-green undertone, and the straight grain shows through at a low satin sheen.
In north light it cools toward neutral gray and the grain recedes. In south light the brown undertone surfaces and the grain lines sharpen. Under warm LEDs it deepens toward espresso, so choose your color temperature with the finish in hand.
What to pair it with
Honed white marble or pale limestone gives clean contrast. Soapstone keeps everything tone on tone. Brushed brass warms the charcoal, while satin nickel keeps it cool and architectural.
For floors, wide-plank oak in a light natural tone balances the weight of the cabinets. Pale terrazzo does the same job with more edge.
Where it works
Prewar co-ops and brownstones can carry it if the lighting is layered. Long Island kitchens with large south-facing windows show the grain at its best.
The raised-panel Astor and Riverside suit older houses. The slab Bowery and Bond fit lofts and condos. The applied-molding Columbus and Lenox sit between the two. See them all in TKG Inset and on the door styles page.
Care and durability
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry right away. Use mild soap, and avoid abrasive pads and ammonia cleaners. Clear standing water near the sink and dishwasher promptly.
Stained wood varies from board to board, and that variation is part of the look. Satin hides fingerprints better than gloss. Compare it with other finishes, or contact us for a sample.
