The color in the room
Hard Maple Icicle is a pale stain that leaves the wood visible. The tone is cream-leaning blond with very little yellow, and the grain stays fine and even.
In north light it turns calm and slightly cool, closer to oat. In south light it warms toward wheat and gets brighter through the day. Under warm LEDs it drifts toward honey, so choose 3000K bulbs if you want it to stay clean.
What to pair it with
Honed Carrara or a soft gray quartzite keeps the palette quiet. Soapstone or a charcoal honed granite gives the pale wood strong contrast.
For metals, brushed nickel and blackened steel stay crisp. Unlacquered brass adds warmth and will patina over time.
For floors, matte white oak in a natural tone is an easy match. Gray terrazzo and slate-look tile also work.
Where it works
This finish suits the narrow, dim kitchens common in prewar co-ops and brownstone floors, where it brings light without painting over the wood. It also works in Long Island coastal and split-level homes with generous daylight.
It comes on several TKG Inset doors, including the Varick and Perry slabs, the Montague with applied molding, and the Cross Four, Arch Twelve and Arch Four mullions. Compare profiles in door styles.
Care and durability
Because this is a stain, the grain shows and each door varies slightly. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and dry right away. Use mild soap only, and avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners. Wipe up spills near the sink and range promptly.
