The color

Alder Caramel is a satin stain on alder. It is a natural wood tone with real depth, not a painted brown.

In north light it settles into a quiet honey-tan, and the grain is easy to see. South light pushes it toward amber. Under warm LEDs it deepens and glows, so choose 2700K for a richer look or 3000K to stay closer to the daylight color.

What to pair it with

Honed white quartzite, soapstone, or a softly veined marble keeps the wood warm without making the room feel heavy. Unlacquered brass, blackened steel, and aged nickel all work.

For floors, go pale with bleached white oak, or dark with slate or charcoal stone. Avoid orange-leaning floors, which compete with the caramel. Plaster white or deep green walls complete the palette.

Where it suits

It fits prewar apartments and brownstones, especially on Chelsea (beaded) or Montague (applied-molding) doors. On Long Island, Clinton Wide (shaker) suits family kitchens. Bond and Varick slab doors give lofts and condos a warm counterpoint to hard surfaces.

It also comes on Columbus (applied-molding). Browse the TKG Inset collection or compare door styles.

Care and durability

A stain finish leaves the wood's character visible, so expect natural variation in grain and tone. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and dry right away. Skip abrasive pads and harsh sprays, and wipe up spills near the sink and range promptly.
