The color

Onyx is a true black paint with a satin sheen, applied to Paint Grade Maple. The coat is opaque and even, so the surface reads as solid color, not wood.

In north light, the black turns cool and deepens toward charcoal. In south light it softens and warms, and the satin catches a gentle glow along edges and profiles. Under warm LEDs, the finish settles into a rich, quiet black.

What to pair it with

Honed white marble or soapstone counters give it contrast without glare. Unlacquered brass warms it, while polished nickel keeps it crisp. Wide-plank white oak or pale limestone underfoot keeps a black kitchen from feeling heavy.

Where it works

In prewar Manhattan apartments and Brooklyn brownstones, black cabinetry anchors a room against plaster, trim, and tall windows. On Long Island, it suits open-plan colonials and renovated ranches, where a dark run of cabinets defines the kitchen.

It comes on doors from slab (Mercer, Bleecker, Hudson) to beaded (Cold Spring), raised-panel (Carroll), and applied-molding (Gramercy Bevel). Browse door styles or the full TKG Inset collection.

Care and durability

A painted finish is easy to maintain. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap, then dry. Skip abrasive pads and harsh cleaners.

Dark surfaces show dust, so a regular wipe-down keeps the satin looking clean. Compare it with other finishes, or contact us to see a sample in your light.
