The color
Carbon is a satin black paint with a soft, even sheen and no visible grain. It reads as true black rather than charcoal, and the satin keeps it from looking glossy or lacquered.
In north light it cools slightly and settles toward ink, so door profiles show as quiet shifts in tone. In south light it deepens, and the sheen picks up a gentle glow across the door face. Under warm LEDs, around 2700K to 3000K, the black softens and loses any blue cast.
What to pair it with
Honed Carrara or a pale limestone keeps the contrast crisp. Soapstone goes tonal and quiet. Oak butcher block adds warmth on an island.
Unlacquered brass will patina against the black. Aged bronze nearly disappears into it, and brushed nickel stays cool and graphic. For floors, try wide-plank white oak, honed limestone, or a pale terrazzo.
Where it suits
Black works well in prewar Manhattan apartments with one good window, where a single dark wall of cabinets adds depth. It also suits brownstone parlor-floor kitchens and opened-up mid-century ranches on Long Island. Gold Coast colonials can carry it across a full run.
It is available on Lispenard Frame (shaker) and Lispenard Slab (slab) within TKG Inset. Compare profiles under door styles, or see the full range of finishes.
Care and durability
This is a painted finish. Wipe it with a soft damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it. Skip abrasive pads, ammonia, and solvent-based cleaners.
Dark satin shows dust and fingerprints more readily than a light color, so a microfiber cloth is a good habit. Wipe spills near the sink and range promptly. To see a sample in your own light, contact us.
