Gowanus in every finish
The door
Gowanus is a slab door set inside a face frame, flush with the frame on all sides. The center panel is flat, with no rail-and-stile profile and no raised field. What you see is wood, a tight reveal, and a straight line.
You can choose square inset for a crisp, architectural edge, or beaded inset, which adds a small shadow detail around each door. Either way, the door reads as furniture rather than cabinetry: quiet, precise, and built into the room.
Where it works
In a pre-war apartment, a flat door keeps a compact kitchen calm next to plaster walls and period trim. In a brownstone, beaded inset acknowledges the house's millwork while the slab panel keeps the kitchen current.
Lofts suit long, uninterrupted runs in oak. In new builds on Long Island and in Miami, the door adds warmth and craft to open plans that can otherwise feel generic.
Choosing a finish
The door comes in Paint Grade Maple, Rift Cut White Oak, Quarter Sawn White Oak, Cherry, Hard Maple, Walnut, and Red Oak, with 82 finishes in all.
For light, airy rooms, try Rift Cut White Oak Heather or Frost. Wheat is a more natural oak. Cherry Bourbon and Walnut Bourbon sit in the medium range, while Walnut Umber and Walnut Natural go deep. For paint, Plaster is a soft off-white. See the full range in finishes.
Practical notes
Clean with a soft, damp cloth and dry right away. Skip abrasive cleaners.
On a slab door, grain does the decorating. Rift cut runs straight and even, quarter sawn shows flecks, and stained wood will vary from door to door. Paint grade maple takes paint smoothly.
Slim pulls, edge pulls, or a simple knob all suit the flat panel. With beaded inset, keep hardware restrained.
